The first title is inscribed by both Johnson brothers to Ralph Van Vechten, the older brother of Carl Van Vechten. The second title is inscribed to Ralph by J. Rosamond Johnson. Ralph Van Vechten died on June 28, 1927. When Ralph's widow, Fannie, died in 1928, Carl Van Vechten inherited $1,000,000 and invested wisely and was not hurt by the crash. Carl never wrote another book but took to portrait photography, capturing many of the important artists, writers and performers of the Harlem Renaissance.In addition to his editing of the classic The Book of American Negro Spirituals, and its companion volume, James Weldon Johnson and his brother wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing," which became so popular that it was known as "The Negro National Anthem".
