Sweden & Denmark
London.: Dickinson Bros.. [ 1854].. Color lithograph with some hand-color, 13 1/2 x 19 inches on sheet size 16 3/4 x 23 inches. With accompanying text sheet. A couple of faint foxed spots, light toning to left and lower edge, adhesive tape to corners of verso (not affecting front image). Very good bright condition. A richly colored view of the Sweden & Norway exhibition and the Denmark exhibition inside the Crystal Palace from the first international World's Fair that took place in Hyde Park, London, England, from 1 May to 15 October 1851. From: Dickinson's Comprehensive Pictures of the Great Exhibition of 1851 From the Originals Painted for H.R.H. Prince Albert by Messrs. [Joseph] Nash, [Louis] Haghe, and [David] Roberts. The text states: "When first the contributions from these countries were talked of, we confess to having confined our expectations to seeing tons of iron and steel, suggested by the name of Sweden, and bushels of wheat and other agricultural produce from Norway. There were of course many specimens of both...but articles to attract the fancy and please the eye were by no means wanting, and the jurors thought fit to reward with a prize medal a collection of wooden vessles for vaious domestic purposes, ornamented with carfvings done by the native peasantry." The Swedish exhibit includes a framed display of botanical art. .
