The First Men in the Moon
George Newnes & Co, London. 1901 - 1st UK Edition, First Binding, 1901, with twelve inserted illustrated plates by Claude Shepperson. Ex Libris. The U.S. Bowen-Merrill edition preceded the British edition by approximately one month. Original decorated blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold gilt. Bumped corners and spine ends with two tiny tears. Spine darkening and light marks on the covers. Intact black coated endpapers with library stamp on front paste down. Eleven black and white full page illustrations though out the text. Internally very clean with no foxing and bindings good although illustration between pages 176 and 177 is loose. 8vo 342 printed pages. The last, and one of the most difficult to find, of Wells’s science fiction titles to be found in a collectible condition. This novel was inspired by Jules Verne’s, ‘Journey to the Moon.’ Unlike Verne, Wells had all scientific aspects of his lunar voyage verified for plausibility by experts at the time. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
