Jude the Obscure. With an Etching by H. Macbeth-Raeburn and a Map of Wessex.
London: Osgood, McIlvaine, and Co., 1896 - Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, roundel to front board in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine rolled, tips rubbed and bumped, occasional faint spotting to contents, rear hinge starting. A very good copy. Frontispiece with tissue guard, map at the end. First edition, first impression, of Hardy's final novel, published on 1 November 1895, as volume 8 of The Wessex Novels. The page numbering was altered during printing, so that sigs. A-H exist in two distinct states, often found mixed. In the first state page numbers are present on partially blank pages, but this was altered so that numbers were omitted at the chapter endings (in conformity with the later gatherings). This copy is predominantly in early state, with only three pages in unnumbered state. It originally appeared as a bowdlerised serial in Harper's New Monthly Magazine between December 1894 and November 1895, with the European and American editions being published simultaneously. Purdy pp. 86–91. [Attributes: First Edition]
