My Early Life
Thornton Butterworth, London, 1930 - The first edition of Churchill?s autobiography. Bound in a pinkish purple cloth that is very prone to wear and fading. 392 pages, index, illustrated with photos maps and drawings. A number of variants are known. This copy has 5 lines on the cover, 12 titles listed, coarse cloth. Inscribed on the blank leaf after the endpaper: To Abe from Winston S. Churchill October 15, 1930. Note that this dated 5 days before publication and uses the familiar first name only inscription, reserved for close friends, in this case (Sir) Abe Bailey (1863-1940), one of the principal mine owners in the Transvaal, one of the largest breeders of race horse in the UK and South Africa, and a long time friend of Churchill. Bailey provided much needed financial support, especially during the 1930s. Bailey predicted Winton's rise to the premiership as early as 1906, and played a strong role in convincing Lloyd George to bring WSC into his cabinet . Besides all the political and military connections; you should know that Bailey's son John married Churchill's daughter Diana. The book is tight and unworn, usual spine fade, good shiny gilt titles. (A37a). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
