Der Landweg durch Rußland nach Ostindien deutlich beschriebnet, und durch eine illumineirte Charte bezeichnet.
Leipzig: In Commission bei E.F. Steinacker,, 1812. Octavo. 16-pages. Sewn in original orange paper on card wraps. Folding engraved map coloured in outline, additional, uncalled for, map showing a route from St. Petersburg to Moscow via Novgorod and Tver. Wraps slightly rubbed and soiled, light browning, very good. First and only edition, extremely uncommon, just 4 copies located on OCLC, all in Germany. Fascinating little pamphlet touching on Napoleon's Indian ambitions and the origins of the Great Game: "Then in 1807, intelligence reached London which was to cause considerable alarm to both the British government and the East India Company's directors. Napoleon … had put it to Tsar Alexander I, that they should together invade India and wrest it from British domination … It was no secret in London and Calcutta that Napoleon had long had his eye on India … The threat never materialised, for Napoleon and Alexander soon fell out. As French troops swept into Russia and entered a burning Moscow, India was temporarily forgotten. But no sooner had Napoleon been driven back inot Europe with terrible losses than another threat arose. This time it was the Russians, brimming with self-confidence and ambition, and this time it was not going to go away" (Hopkirk, The Great Game, p.3). The route traced goes via Tsaritsyn, now Volgograd, to Astrakhan on the Caspian, crossing to Asterabad/Gorgan then through Herat and Kandahar to Attok before descending on Lahore.
