NOTES ON THE COLOURS OF THE NATIONAL GUARD, WITH SOME INCIDENTAL PASSAGES OF THE HISTORY OF THE REGIMENT
New York: from an Amateur Press, for private distribution, 1864. Small 4to.; (26), 41, (1), 42-52, (1), 46 [sic], (1), viii, (1) addenda, [blank], (3)pp.; paginated text printed on rectos only. Illustrated, 13 mounted photographs, portraits, memorial page honoring former regimental commander Colonel L.W. Stevens, color illustration of the badge worn by veterans of the National Guard. Tipped-in errata sheet describes the "crudities" of the typography, the result of the inexperience of the novice printer, "a young lady … without previous experience." Printed tan wrappers (worn and soiled, corners chipped, spine partly eroded). Good copy of a Civil War rarity. First edition, 1/67 copies, this one inscribed by the author on the half-title to the widow of Colonel Stevens. This history of the Seventh New York Regiment includes extensive information on the unit's activities in defense of the nation's capital during the Civil War; one photograph depicts life at Camp Cameron, on Meridian Hill, in Washington, another shows the regiment's gun squad at Federal Hill in Baltimore in 1862, and a third shows a group of soldiers in bivouac in front of Frederick, Maryland, in 1863. Not in Dornbusch or Nevins, or other Civil War or photographic reference sources consulted. OCLC locates eight copies (George Eastman House, New York Historical Society, U.S. Military Academy. New York Public, Library of Congress, Lehigh, Brown, Vermont-Bailey).
