Little common first edition in Dutch of this influential work on the history, geography, language, customs and natural history of Africa, by the Granada born geographer al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi (1483-1552), diplomat, poet, scholar, galley slave and world traveller during the Renaissance. He is better known as Leo Africanus. Trade expeditions, diplomatic missions and other travels take the legendary Moorish exile Leo Africanus after the fall of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada (1492) to Fez, Timbuktu, Cairo and Constantinople. In Rome he writes his famous 'Description of Africa', a book that for a long time was a unique source of knowledge about the Islamic culture and Africa.
