EXTRAORDINARILY RARE VOLUMECASSANDRA, THE FAM'D ROMANCE GAUTHIER DE COSTE, SEIGNEUR DE LA CALPRENEDE PUBLISHED 1652 DIMENSIONS About 11 1/4" x 7 1/2" x 2 1/2" DESCRIPTION Titled in full "CASSANDRA: / THE / FAM'D / ROMANCE, / THE / Whole Work: / In Five PARTS; / Written Originally in FRENCH, / AND / Now Elegantly rendred into / ENGLISH / By a Person of Quality." Published in London, printed for Humphrey Mosely, at the Princes Arms in St. Paul's Church yard; William Bentley, and Thomas Heath, in Covent-Garden, M.DC.LII (1652). As Cassandra was completed in 1650 in French, this appears to be the first published English version. Although the name of the translator is not given, it may have been Charles Cotterell. All content present, including Part I Book I - VI, Part II Book I - VI, Part III Book I-III and the continuation of Part III, Part IV Book I-VI, Part V (Ult.) Book I-V. The back end papers contain three hand written in inscriptions, one illegible, the other two reading "Cassandre / By Calprenede. 1612-1663," and "Thomas Pickering, Barnsley / Yorkshire, England." There is a high probablility that this book belonged to Thomas Pickering (ca. 1621-1679), a Benedictine lay brother who served in England during the time of recusancy.
