(Bayly, Lewis)
The Practice of Piety; directing a Christian how to walke that he may please God. Amplified by the author.
Printed for Robert Allot, and are to be sold at the signe of the. Published 1634. 12mo, contemporary dark brown calf wth elaborate gilt floral chain-link design to both covers and spine, (18) 701 (1) pp, with engraved title page borders. Good copy, neat Japanese paper reinforcement to front inner hinge, some wear to edges of front flyleaf, contents very good, binding shows some loss of leather to bottom half inch of spine, otherwise a splendid example of this oft-published Puritan devotional manual first published in the early 1600s. This is its 32nd edition. It was a wildly popular book and an enormous influence on John Bunyan, who credits it with causing his spiritual awakening. Intact copies from the early 17th century are rare on the market as most copies were read to the point of tatters. No copy has come up for auction from before 1650 in the last several decades. OCLC lists one copy at Oxford (COPAC lists the same copy; ESTC S90427). Good.
