Chaytor, John
Handwritten notebook with exquisite watercolors: A Course of General Instruction at Woolwich (Royal Military Academy), ca. 1825
Woolwich, England. Ca. 1825 Notebook kept by John Chaytor (1800-1861), who became a colonel in the Royal Engineers. 8vo, half roan, 186 handwritten pages, many with finely done watercolor sketches, some full page, on a variety of military topics, ranging from artillery and rockets and signal corps instruction, to equestrian, ordnance, cannons, tying knots, etc. A note on the pastedown explains how this was passed down through the family to Chaytor's daughter, who married a fellow named Brinton, etc. Some wear to spine of notebook, but a lovely copy. Woolwich was the home of the Royal Military Academy for the training of commissioned officers for the Royal Engineers and Signal Corps. Good.
