The trial of the presumptive Queen before the House of Lords became the arena in which this political battle was fought. Among other things, the trial led to the birth of so-called 'tabloid' coverage of the monarchy, and as such was a watershed moment for the relationship between the monarchy and an increasingly powerful free British press. For example, it was alleged that Caroline employed exotic male dancers: and the dance was even demonstrated in court. In response, Caroline's attorney, Lord Brougham, threatened to reveal details of the King's private life that he felt would damage the monarchy.
