The North East Prospect of Lancaster.
London. S. & N. Buck. 1728. Buck, Samuel and Nathaniel (delin et sculpt). No. 35 in a series. Engraving on laid paper, view of Lancaster dated 1728, image size approximately 10 x 28 inches (plate mark) on sheet 15 3/4 x 33 1/2 inches, hand colored at a later date. Toning to all but the lower 2 inches of the sheet, somewhat uneven in spots, but the image would display well if the untoned area were matted out. An engaging 18th century bird's eye style city view by Nathaniel and Samuel Buck, who produced a series of handsome views in the first half of the 18th century. A key at bottom right identifies 12 landmarks (The Bowling Green, The Castle, The Custom House, etc.) with publisher's name and publication date below last item on list. Text bottom left provides information on the city's history dating from Roman times; also, details regarding its governance as well as a "Castle of great Antiquity which is at present the County Goal." The two Members of Parliament are named.
