Beautiful Japanese Samurai Armor Armour Lacing Epaulettes Pattern Design Book
Very good. [Matsuoka Tokikata; Honma Hyakuri]. 尚古鎧色一覽 [Shouko Gaishoku Ichiran] [Catalogue of Color Combinations and Designs of Epaulettes on Old Armor]. [Tokyo]: [Yoshikawa Kōbunkan], 1930. 8vo (6-1/4 x 8-3/4"), burgundy cloth-covered boards stamped in gilt on the upper board and spine, gilt top-edge, printed matching cardstock slipcase; unpaginated, but 84 leaves hinged at the spine, all but the title page printed either recto or verso (primarily facing pages), with hundreds of elaborately printed full-color epaulettes adorning the majority of the pages. Covers and endpapers a bit rubbed, gilt titling a bit faded, rear hinge just barely starting, the slipcase somewhat worn and rubbed, but the overall very clean and bright. The sumptuous 1930 reprinting of this catalogue of traditional Japanese armor-lacing patterns, first published in 1833 (and reprinted in 1901). Originally issued in two volumes, reissued here as one. Matsuoka (1764-1840) was a samurai and scholar of the royal court; Honma (1784-1854) was his disciple. They devoted themselves to recording the history of yūsokukojitsu (the ceremonies, manners, and customs of the royal court and military households). The colors and lacing patterns of the epaulettes (or shoulder ribbons) on display here provided a "code" as to rank, fealty, clan, and more. "Shouko Gaishoku Ichiran" is sometimes translated as "A Grammar of Color of Ancient Armor" or "List of Colors of Samurai Epaulettes" or other variations on the theme.
