Schraembl, Franz Anton (after James Rennell)
Map of Southwest India- Hindoostan, Maldive & Laccadive Islands): Neueste Karte Von Hindostan Bengalen.Mit Der Anzeige Der strassen ,paesse, Und Genauester Eintheilung Der Britischen Besitzungen in Ostindien Verfasst Von Herrn Jakob Rennell.
Vienna: FA Schraembl , 1788. Scarce German version (southwestern sheet only; only one of the four sheets of the complete map) of James Rennell's landmark copperplate map of Hindoostan. Early hand-colored outlines, VG but for mild chipping uppre edge (trimmed to plate mark; as issued?). Exceptionally large and decorative cartouche. Rennell's "Memoir of a Map of Hindoostan" was seen between 1783 and 1793, and he was a major British geographer of his era (first nearly accurate map of India done for his "A Bengal Atlas"). He was a surveyor in the Royal Navy (he also published on oceanography) and worked with the likes of Alexander Dalrymple and Mungo Park. This is major and historically significant map. There are nice images of the Maldive and Laccadive Islands off the southwestern shores of India. The full image measures 24x28 inches (61x71cm)..
