Frontispiece. 20 leaves. 506 pages. 3 leaves. Full calf, spine gilt, blind stamped filled round sides (contemporary binding, restored). First Collective Edition, partly original, of the poems by the English diplomat Matthew Prior (1664-1721). This very large format edition (280x457mm.) was supervised by the author himself, who payed particular care and attention to the typographical execution and to the illustration, in order to produce a work of superlative quality. Precious copy dedicated to the French writer Maximilien Henri, Marquis of Saint-Simon (1720-1799), by one of the subscribers of the edition, Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773), with the following manuscript inscription: "Given to the Marquis St Simon by his great friend the Lord Chesterfield jul. 1755 Blackheath". The writer and politician Lord Chesterfield was one of the important personalities of the Enlightenment in Great Britain; he was known, among others, by Voltaire, Montesquieu and Vincent de Gournay. All along his diplomatic and political carrier, he showed remarkable qualities, especially during his successful administration of Ireland, from 1744 to 1746.The work is illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, and with numerous initials, head- and tail pieces. Foxing to first leaves. Very good copy in its original binding (restored).
