Prall, 1849. First edition. Many of the ads have beautiful illustrations. Very good condition. Leather binding has edgewear at spine hinges. Pages have minor foxing. Binding and hinges are strong. This book was written to promote a model of New York city carved in wood and exactly replicating every building in the city. It was conceived and executed by the author, E. Porter Belden, with 150 artisans, at a reported cost of over $20,000, and was exhibited at the Minerva Room beginning in 1846, with the intention of exhibiting it throughout the United States. Whitman saw it and praised it highly. The book on offer here is a history of New York by Belden, written with the aid of the "vast number of statistical details" collected in the course of constructing the model.
