Born into a wealthy family of textile merchants, Gailhabaud (1810-1888) devoted his life to the study of architecture, art, and archeology, and spent eight years compiling this beautifully illustrated encyclopedia. He attempted to make his works both authoritative and accessible to laymen, but his enthusiasm got the better of him and by the 1860s he had lost much of his fortune attempting to publish a monumental history of art.
