The Evening World, 1898. First Edition. Folded sheet. Quarto, 4pp. In good condition at best, unevenly folded and showing some soiling, faint dampstaining, and creasing to margins. Small area of insect damage to margin at spine, not approaching any contents. Fantastically rare volume of sheet music, which recounts the unhappy tale of an African-American narrator who keads up to the Yukon to strike it big during the Klondike Gold Rush, only to be disappointed. He sings, in dialect: "When I said my darlin Clo, For de gold bricks I must go She put her dainty hand in mind and said with a sweet and winsome grace, Don't go to dat chilly place, Where de snow's so hard to climb..." After he loses Clo to another man who has just returned from the Klondike, he sets off for fortune himself, only to come out (as so many did) empty-handed. But for however mired the verses are in racial insensitivity and caricature, the chorus strikes a poignant tone to the modern reader: "Oh! de Klondike ain't what's crack'd up to be Jest go try like me, Jest go try an' see For de Klondike ain't what its thought to be, Dere was no gold or richness there for me." Efforts to locate any institutional holdings or auction records for this piece of music were fruitless. A comprehensive volume entitled "Music of the Alaska-Klondike Gold Rush: Songs & History" (U. of Alaska Press, 1999) makes no reference to this work among its exhaustive list of nearly 100 songs about the gold rush known to have been written during the period.
