London: John Churchill, 1774. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 5". Unnamed. A collection of works by Charles Churchill, an English poet and satirist. The fifth edition. Complete in four volumes. In the personal binding of General Lambert Richard Loveday, a General in the Bengal army. Frontispiece to volume I and engraved vignette title page of Pan to volumes I, II and III. Churchill wrote satires on a range of subjects. Rosciad to volume I describes the faults of various actors and actresses on the London stage in a competition judged by Shakespeare and Jonson. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to spines and board edges. Crest to boards is that of General Lambert Loveday. Small amount of rubbing to the joints and to the spines. A few spots to boards. Slight sunning to the spine. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, General Lambert Loveday. Another prior owner's bookplate to recto of front endpaper to volume I, Douglas Grant. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Prior owner's pencil notations to the first few pages of volume IV. Ribbon bookmarks present to most volumes. Very Good
