The Shorter Poems of John Milton. With twelve photogravure plates by Samuel Palmer and a twelve-page preface by his son, A.H.Palmer.
Seeley & Company, London, 1889. First edition. Folio. xx + 124pp. In an attractive contemporary rebinding of light-brown half pigskin with cloth sides, five raised bands and gilt lettering to the spine ("Milton's Minor Poems. Samuel Palmer"). Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. The binding reminiscent of the Arts & Craft movement, and perhaps by the Ashendene Press. A touch of browning to the margins of the pastedowns and free endpapers. Slight fox spotting to the half-title and plate margins, and the leather a little fingered in places. Loose unprinted tissue-protectors accompany six of the plates. A very good copy of an uncommon item. "Valpy asked Palmer if he would produce a set of drawings . illustrating Milton's minor poems . It was to prove to be a pleasant commission for palmer, and out of the drawings stemmed some of his noblest etchings - The Bellman, The Lonely Tower and elements of The Early Ploughman. The drawings were published posthumously" - Raymond Lister.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.
