One folding page "Series Morborum Muliebrium Qu Ae Etiam Continet Indicem." Index and special title-page to Part II bound after Part I. An important 17th-century gynecological work by the eminent Sephardic physician, Rodrigo de Castro (1541-1627), author of Medicus-Politicus, one of the seminal works on medical ethics of his time. He fled from the Inquisition to become one of the earliest Jewish settlers in Hamburg. He arrived in Germany in 1596. Friedenwald ("Jewish Luminaries in Medical History" pp 54-56) calls him "one of the foremost physicians in establishing gynaecology in the Renaissance period." Castro was a member of a distinguished émigré family. (see Friedenwald: "The Jews and Medicine: Essays" Vol.I, pp. 57-61 & Vol.II, pp. 448-53). Minor to moderate rubbing along edges of binding. Clear water-staining to upper part of pages from front endpaper through page 177 (not affecting text). Text in Latin. Binding in overall good+, interior in good to good+ condition. g to g+.
