1648. Vigevano: C. Corrado, 1678-9. 265 x 180mm. Au uncommon adaptation of Ramusio's plan of the village of Hochelaga, in present-day Montreal, published in 1556 to illustrate Jacques Cartier's expedition to Canada in 1535, the first printed depiction of a North American settlement. Above the plan is a cross-section of the defensive walls, demostrating how they were defended. This version comes from 'Arquitectura civil recta y oblicua' (Straight and Oblique Civil Architecturea), a treatise on architecture by Juan Caramuel y Lobkowitz (1606-82) a Spanish philosopher.
