[New York]: [1836-1872]. Full Leather. The substantial and richly illustrated commonplace book of Margaret M. Tillotson of New York, with numerous other items pasted onto the pages. Book with 114 pp., a significant majority of which was used by Ms. Tillotson in her scrapbooking efforts, detailing her relationships with other members of the Tillotson/Livingston family. With 22 tipped in Christmas, Easter, and other cards; additionally with tipped in letters, drawings, two photographs, and a few illustrated postcards; items range from the 1830's to 1860's. With a few sketches and watercolors accompanying poetry by Mary and Thomas Chrystie, antique glass dealers in New York at the time, and original charcoal or pencil sketches by numerous family members such as her Aunt Thompson, Cornelia Tillotson, Margaret's mother, Uncle Montgomery Livingston, Uncle Robert Livingston, and numerous others. Also with a lengthy letter on 'happiness in life' by her Aunt [Catharine Livingston] Garrettson, the same who married the early Methodist preacher Freeborn Garrettson, and the usual number of poetry and religious musings, and two pages of tipped in children's letters and sketches from 'Jack' to 'Aunt Martah.' This scrapbook, or commonplace book, contains an intimate look into the Tillotson branch of the powerful Livingston family of New York. ~~A treasure trove of art from some of New York's most prominent 19th century families.~~Green straight grain morocco, worn along the joints, with surface loss to the edges of the boards. Good binding.
