Volume one illustrated by an engraved frontispiece portrait of James Macpherson, volume two with five engraved plates, and volume three with six engraved plates, scenes from the poems. Engravings by James Fittler, A.R.A. from pictures by Henry Singleton. The first editions of these works were published in 1762 and 1763. Oxford DNB, Mairtin O Briain, "Oisín [Ossian]"; Oxford DNB, Derick S. Thomson, "Macpherson, James". A collection of Gaelic poetry and ballads, attributed to Ossian, a figure from "Dark-Age" Ireland. Ossian supposedly lived during the third century A.D., and survived long enough to meet Saint Patrick and other early Christian dignitaries upon their arrival to Ireland. Ossian functions as a bridge between Pagan and Christian Ireland. The poems in this collection concern the Fianna (warrior bands) led by Fionn mac Cumhaill (the father of Ossian). Ossian recounts the deeds and heroic actions of the Fianna, as well as their destruction. The Fenian literary and oral traditions slightly diverge, evolving from the fifth century all the way to 1200 A.D. The first editions of these works were published in 1762 and 1763.
