[40], 422, [58]pp. Contemporary full vellum with leather strings and handwritten title on spine. Book housed in a modern custom-made red cloth clamshell box, with gold lettering to spine. Decorative initials and tailpieces. Dedication to Isabel de Borbón (1602-1644), Queen consort of Spain from 1621 to 1644. Originally published in Mexico in 1642, this rare second edition of Juan de Palafox y Mendoza's "Varon de deseos" is intended to lead the exercitant through the purgative and illuminative life up to the unitive. Binding partly rippled, age-toned and soiled. Leather strings partly missing. Book block partly detached from binding. Small and sporadic water-staining at upper margin of pages (not affecting lettering). Minor worming to leaves 3 to 7, slightly affecting lettering. Clamshell box in very good, binding in fair, interior in good to good+ condition. f to g+. About the author: Blessed Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (1600-1659), was a Spanish politician, administrator, and Catholic clergyman in 17th century Spain and colonial Mexico. Palafox was the Bishop of Puebla (1640-1655), and the interim Archbishop of Mexico (1640-1642). He also held political office, from June 10, 1642 to November 23, 1642 as the Viceroy of New Spain. He lost a high-profile struggle with the Jesuits in New Spain, resulting in a recall back to Spain, to the minor Diocese of Osma in Old Castile.
