The endpapers appear to be a blow-up of one of the engravings, ''Cwm Graianog''. Designed and printed by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge, on Wookey Hole Mill mould-made paper. Bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in quarter dark blue morocco with cloth sides; top edge gilt.One of 110 numbered copies signed by the author, artist and engraver, and with an extra set of the ten engravings.''Just after the Second World War, John Piper and Reynolds Stone, both enthusiasts of nineteenth century topographical guidebooks, decided to produce a modern equivalent, to illustrate the mountains of Snowdonia. They used wood-engravings, both as a reproductive purpose, so that the pictures could be printed together with the text, and as a creative interpretation of the drawings, which in several cases Piper did directly on the block. Unfortunately, John Murray, the first choice as publisher.could not undertake it, and the blocks languished for twenty years.We were eager to print these magnificent engravings, and as the Carters and the Stones are close cousins, negotiations were simplified.
