AMERICAN WOMAN'S MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK GUIDE TO STITCH WORK 1934-1935 VG condition
1934. [WOMEN'S EDUCATION - STITCH WORK] ANONYMOUS. Manuscript Notebook Guide to Stitch Work. 1934-1935. Quarto (30cm.); seventeen (17) ring-bound manila folders; contents include a total of seventy-three (73) swatches displaying one hundred and two (102) stitching samples and designs, accompanied by detailed ink instructions on how and when to use each design. Manila folders uniformly toned, the final two starting to separate from metal rings; eleven swatches loose or separated from stock, though most remain in fine condition, albeit occasionally a bit wrinkled. Overall a Very Good, quite pleasing and impressive archive. Detailed stitch work notebook belonging possibly to an instructor, professional seamstress, or gifted student. The samples and instructions begin with the simplest basting stitches, including recommendations for when to use (Roll whip: "used on sheer material, handkerchiefs, etc."; while the French seam is "used on lingerie, children's dresses, baby clothes."). The pieces progress to more ambitious designs, from seams to seam finishing, to plackets, button holes, pockets both bound and welt, embroidery, facings (inside, outside, curved, pointed, scalloped), fragoting, tucking, cording, and concluding with a tailored collar and ruffles. Loose items include five stitched button samples, and swatches to accompany the lesson for sewing godets.
