Rare 1800 1st Ed. "Annual Anthology" Southey & Coleridge Poems Romantic Mvmt.
Bristol: Longman. This is the original 1800 "Annual Anthology" edited by Romantic Movement founders, Robert Southey and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It followed on the first anthology of 1799 (Vol.1) as a stand-alone Volume 2 compilation of poetry with contributions from themselves, and others including Amelia Opie, Joseph Hucks, Charles Lloyd and Mrs. Robinson. There are over 27 poems by Coleridge alone, with more by Southey, often employing multiple pen names for each and some of the other poets. Coleridge was therefore at turns, "Esteesti", "Cordomi", "Laberius" and "STC", while Southey was "Byondo", "Erthusyo" and "Theoderit--anagram for 'The Editor', etc. This highly collectible work: Has only been privately owned with NO ownership marks or writings. Is in its original then fine binding of burgundy leather and marbleized covers with marbleized page ends now darkened. The unmarked textblock is firm and includes all 299 pages with all clean empty endpapers. The 4.25" x 6.5" cover hinges are split through but currently invisibly and delicately holding to the spine which as shown, has rubbing and losses along with book corners. The spine title label is happily intact with quite legible gilding but the leather is splitting at the label's center. There are closed margin tears on pg. 21/22, 103/104 and margin tears/short loss on pg.139/140. Photos of auction hammer pricing and descriptions for both years have been included to articulate the value placed on this time in English literature, the birth of Romanticism in Great Britain.
