1852 Reward Broadside Runaway Slave St. Louis MO Bo & Susan Franks Collection
Missouri: This is for an original reward broadside for a runaway slave dated August 23, 1852 (St. Louis, Missouri). This is from the well known Bo and Susan Franks Collection that was auctioned in 2012. Many collectors know that the Bo and Susan Franks collection contained many significant, rare, and unique artifacts with historical significance. In fact, many items from their collection have been published in catalogs and books. The broadside (with frame) measures approximately 21 1/2" tall x 14 1/2" wide. Meanwhile, the broadside (within frame) measures approximately 18 1/8" tall x 11" wide. The document is free floating in the frame and is not adhered to anything (there is an old lined paper behind it). So, it is simply laying on paper under the glass. Clearly, this broadside was framed a very long time ago and has been preserved quite well. I've provided several pictures of the broadside outside the frame. As you can see, the tips of corners have small tears with the lower left corner being the largest. However, the remainder of the broadside remains in great intact condition. There are some creases from folding and staining from age, but I do not see any other tears (aside from corners). This appears to be preserved in great condition but I'm sure it could benefit from being reframed. It will need a new paper backing behind the broadside (the paper backing is torn and brittle from age). Also, it is a very heavy frame.
