1951. ELIZABETH DAVID French Country Cooking This is the hardback First Edition published by John Lehmann, London in 1951. (I like tradition, and clarity, so please be assured that any book I describe as a First Edition is a First Impression). With a frontispiece, title page, eight further full page decorations and nine chapter headings by John Minton. Two opposing leaves have small marginal marks and some offsetting from the leather turn ins on the first and last leaves, otherwise a very good clean copy internally. Rebound in half dark red leather, with marbled paper boards. With five raised bands and a lettering label on the spine. Top edge of leaves stained red. A little rubbing of the marbled paper. Very firm, with unmarked leather, and overall a very good, bright copy. Loosely inserted is an Autograph Letter Signed of some 70 words dated '29.5.79'. The letter is written on both sides of a semi stiff card with the author's name and address printed thereon. It is in response to a letter received from a lady who had written to say that she had had this copy rebound. A rather self-effacing Elizabeth David writes: 'My goodness, that binding sounds very grand indeed - too much so I'm afraid for my very simple little book. It was only my second effort, and it all needs rewriting. Oh well, it's a period piece now I suppose.'. In fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
