Krakow: D. E. Friedleina, 1902. First edition. In publisher's wrapping. Untrimmed. Cover creased at edges. Spine worn at head. Some creases here and there. Otherwise in very good condition.. First edition. In publisher's wrapping. 59 [5] p. Scarce first edition of the first Polish translation of an early work by William Morris. Sztuka, jej troski i nadzieje is a partial translation of a collection of talks given by Morris, originally published under the title Hopes and Fears for Arts in 1882. Although he is best known as a textile designer, William Morris (1834-1896) is also considered a pioneer of the modern fantasy genre as well as a social activist who helped to win acceptance of socialism in Great Britain. Published in Polish the same year as Morris' novel News from Nowhere (Wieści z nikąd), Hopes and Fears for Arts is likely to be the first of his works to be translated into Polish.
