Witnesses Against Our Vanishing Nan Goldin, David Wojnarowicz Rare
Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing November 16, 1989 - January 16. 1990 Exhibition catalog. Artists Space Gallery, New York. Softcover 32 pp. Plus two page essay attached. Nan Goldin gathered a group of artists friends who shared her concerns about the experiences of living on the Lower East Side of New York city during the Aids epidemic. Essays by Nan Goldin, Linda Yablonsky, Cookie Mueller, David Wojnarowicz underscored the artist concerns. Additionally the essay by David Wojnarowicz entitled Post Cards From America: X-rays From Hell was immediately controversial because of his blistering attack on the establishment especially their petty concerns with art by artists like Andres Serrano and Robert Mapplethorpe in light of what he was witnessing in his community. Artists included in the exhibition: David Armstrong, Tom Chesley, Dorit Cypis, Clarence Elie-Riviera, Darrel Ellis, Allen Frame, Peter Hugar, Kiki Smith Philip-Lorca DiCorcia plus many more. Already scarce what makes this catalog even more special is this addition of the incredibly rare two page press statement by David Wojnarowicz where he described a meeting held November 15, 1989 where he confronted the chairman of the N.E.A. and about his views on the situation. He also mentioned the views of New York city Cardinal O'Connor and North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms. I have not been able to locate another copy of the attached press release. Shipped via USPS Priority Mail.
