barcelona: an interesting book if your a cebu antique collector.(134 years old) 1887 illustracion artistica on page 100 to 101 there is a picture of old cebu.probably the oldest photo you can see about cebu? photo taken by the famous manuel arias rodriguez. Agencia Editorial was a bookshop located in Escolta, Manila in the 1880s into the 20th century. Manuel Arias y Rodriguez (1850-1924), a wealthy Spanish book dealer and amateur photographer, ran the business with his brother Vincente. In addition to books, the firm sold a wide range of photographs of urban and landscape views of the regions. Records show that Agencia Editorial was located at Carriedo 2 between 1889 and 1894. In 1901, the shop had moved to Carriedo 50, Manila. Manuel Arias was sympathetic to the revolutionary ferment. While selling Dr. Jose Rizal's two novels on the sly, he undertook a personal odyssey: he photographed his comfortable surroundings as well as scenes from treks to distant provinces. Arias took on the role of war correspondent of the Philippine Revolution against Spain between 1896 and 1897 and supplied images to the Barcelona journal La Ilustracion Artistica between 1897 and 1900. In addition, his photographs appeared in 'El Comercio', a newspaper that featured the Philippine-Spanish war.
