London: J. Flesher for R[ichard] Royston, 1655. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. John Spottiswood, a 16th-century Scottish archbishop best known for his book "History of the Church and State of Scotland". First published in 1655 decades after his death, this work became one of the most important histories on the Church of Scotland, much for its considerable discussions of events involving the Church, biographical sketches of archbishops and bishops, as well as liturgical texts used in the church. This 1655 first edition is considerably rare and highly desirable, note the inclusion of the illustrated frontispiece by famous illustrator Wenceslas Hollar, along with the curious portrait of Charles I.
