The History of the Life and Reign of Philip King of Macedon; the Father of Alexander, Thomas Leland, Printed by Thomas Harrison, London, 1758, vol. 1 224 pages with frontispiece, vol. 2 322 pages with frontispiece and folding plate, full leather, two volumes, 4to. In good condition. Wear to spines and edges of binding. Leather remains soft and rich in color. Nicely bound. Label on vol. one spine is chipping. Gilt work remains bright. Damp staining to vol 1 frontispiece. Damp staining on rear end papers of volume two. Worm damage to first fifteen pages of vol. 2. Lightly toned. Minimal foxing. Unmarked. Bindings tight and intact. Please see photos. Thomas Leland was an Irish historian, translator and academic and the author o the early gothic novel Longsword, Earl of Salisbury: An Historical Romance, published in 1762. He was born in Dublin and educated at Thomas Sheridan's school and then at Trinity College, where he became Professor of Oratory in 1763. He translated the Orations of Demosthenes in three volumes and wrote our volume in 1758, making this a true first edition. Leland was made fellow of Trinity College in 1746. RAREB1758HOPA.
