In 1880, Sir Henry Charles Burdett KCB (18 March 1847 29 April 1920) , financier and philanthropist. became secretary to the share and loan department of the London Stock Exchange. in 1882, Burdett's Official Intelligence of Securities, the Stock Exchange encyclopaedia, had appeared for the first time. It had a precursor in The Railway Intelligence, and in 1899 its title was altered to The Stock Exchange Official Intelligence. The Bookplate for the Seymour Memorial Library, part of the Johannesburg Public Library. Louis Seymour was an American mining engineer who came out to South Africa with De Beers in 1889 and was subsequently appointed chief mechanical engineer to Rand Mines.He was killed in action in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 and funds were raised to establish a technical library in his name. The Seymour Memorial Library was opened in 1905 and became the principal library of science and technology in South Africa and became one of the special collections under control of the Johannesburg Public Library.
