President Theodore Rooseveltgave his backing to the expedition, andin his introduction to the book wrote: "Commander Peary has made alldwellers in the civilized world his debtors . He has performed one of the greatfeats of our time; he has won high honour for himself and for his country; andwe welcome his story of the triumph which he won in the immense solitudes ofthe wintry north." Printed on heavy white paper, roughcut edges with slight soiling commensurate with the book's age. Page binding istight and pages clean, some very occasional foxing; xii, 326 pp., 4photogravures, 116 tipped-in photographic illustrations, 16 photographs. Original cream vellum boards, slightlyshaken, some soiling to both covers, original ties missing. Gilt pictorialroundel on front cover, gilt head ofpolar bear on rear cover. Inscription inside the front coverreads 'Mr & Mrs Stanley Robinson with all best wishes from their brotherJack. Xmas 1910.' The bookplate is of the crest and motto of the Stag Line,owned by the Robinson family; my great-aunt, Ella Fletcher, married herbrother's boyhood friend, Charles Robinson.
