New York: Johnson, Fry & Company, 1861. Clean covers and spines with no stains; there are a few random scuffs to the leather; sharp corners. Both volumes are tightly bound with no loose pages. Bright gilt on all page edges. Clean interiors with only some foxing to the pages; no tears or writing found with the exception of a name written in pen on a front end paper of each volume); a couple random fern leaves are tucked between pages. Overall the set is in very good condition. This is a handsome, leather-bound set of the "National Portrait Gallery of EMINENT AMERICANS" by Evert A. Duyckinck. The engraved title pages are dated 1861 (volume I) and 1864 (volume II); Johnson, Fry & Company; New York. The set contains beautiful full-page engraved plates "from original full-length paintings" by Alonzo Chappel. Complete set in 2 volumes. Nicely bound in full leather with decorative covers, 5 raised bands on the spine, bright gilt on all page edges, and an illustrated title page. The set contains a total of 151 biographical sketches of "Orators, Statesmen, Naval and Military Heroes, Jurists, Authors, etc." from Colonial America through the Civil War. Examples include Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Daniel Boone, Eli Whitney, Noah Webster, Washington Irving, Andrew Jackson, Daniel Webster, James Fenimore Cooper, Stephen Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ulysses S.
