1792 "SOLITUDE UPON THE MIND AND HEART" Beautiful hidden Fore Edge Painting
London: C. Dilly. Up for sale is a 1792 second edition copy of "SOLITUDE CONSIDERED WITH RESPECT TO ITS INFLUENCE UPON THE MIND AND THE HEART" written originally in German by M. Zimmerman, Aulic counsellor and physician to his Britannic Majesty at Hanover. Translated from the French of J. B. Mercier. This copy has a beautiful fore-edge painting that can only be seen through the gilded fore-edge by fanning the text block. The scene according to a written note laid into the book is "Naples from the Sea". This book is in very good condition. Rubbing/chipping wear to the calf-skin boards around the edges, corners and at the top/bottom of the spine panel. Some rubbing/soiling wear to the front/rear board panels. Some soiling and chipping along the spine panel at the gutter edges. Previous owners bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Some offsetting/foxing to the title page. The spine and pages are very tight. Text block is clean with only small, scattered foxing. There are no other marks, tears, bookplates or writing in this book.
