Full title: THE WORKS OF WILLIAM HOGARTH From the Original Plates Restored by James Heath, with the Addition of Many Subjects Not Before Collected, to which are Prefixed a Biographical Essay on the Genius and Productions of Hogarth and Explanations of the Subjects of the Plates by John Nichols Author: William Hogarth Publication: Baldwin Cradock and Joy, 1822 or later A very good copy of the expanded edition of Hogarth collected by Baldwin Cradock & Joy in the early 19th century. The book is an elephant folio, 52 x 66 cm (20.5 x 26 inches), very heavy (over 15 kg). The binding is half calf with matching marbled boards and endpapers, tooled gilt spine, all edges gilt. Portrait frontispiece of Hogarth and his dog Trump by Benjamin Smith, xi, [3], 42 pages, and 116 plates (with 153 engravings). There are also the two plates, Before and After, plus the spurious Feeding The Poultry ("the suppressed plates") in a hidden pocket at the rear of the book. The book is complete but there is a small loss to the bottom right corner of plate 115 (six spurious Hogarth tickets) and repairs to plate 115, 116 (no loss to image), and 19 (The Beggar's Opera bengraved by William Blake, tear across image). There is some foxing which appears to be more on the plates with larger engravings, but only in a few cases is the image affected. Page 42 (the last page of text) is a bit tanned, and the portrait frontispiece has more widespread foxing, but again the image is not badly affected and unusually for this title the frontispiece is not creased.
