Signed by Author Axel Munthe The Story of San Michele First Edition 27th Impression 1931 About the Book Axel Munthe was a Swedish doctor who was made internationally famous by the publication of this book. The book is an autobiography of his life and work in Sweden, France and Italy. He was the doctor and friend to queen Victoria of Sweden as well providing medical help to the poor free of charge. While in Italy he lived in the Villa San Michele on the Isle of Capri, which he had built in the late 19th Century. The book has been signed and dated 1932 at Torre di Materita by the author to the half title page. Torre di Materita which was his second house on the island, a medieval tower converted to a villa by Munthe. During this time his sight was failing which accounts for the very large and erratic writing. There is a gift inscription to the first blank page to Gwen, who was Gwen Ffrangcon Davis the actress, who visited Capri in 1932. Hardback blue cloth covers with gilt decoration to cover and spine, 534 printed pages plus one page of advertising. No dust jacket. Condition The book is in good condition. There is minor wear to covers consistent with age The spine has faded slightly and there are small splits to top and bottom.. There is foxing to the early pages mainly away from the text.
