Kandinsky, Wassily (1866-1944)
Zwei Frauen in Mondschaft" [Two women in moonlight}, color woodcut, 1913
Munich: R. Piper, 1913. One of 300 copies with the artist's monogram incorporated into the design of the woodblocks. "Zwei Frauen in Mondschaft" is no. 100 in Kurt Roethel's catalogue raisonné of Kandinsky's prints. The image is 8.8 x 11.8 cm (3.5 x 4.625 in., oversquare). The van Gelder Zonen paper is 26 x 27.5 cm (11 x 10.75 in.). Kandinsky was one of the founders of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). The suite "Klänge," from which this color woodcut comes, appeared in 1913, the same year as the Armory Show in New York. Kandinsky's "Improvisation 27" was one of the most radical works on view. Alfred Stieglitz bought the painting, which now is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The print is unframed and will be supplied in a good temporary mat.
