De Quincey, Thomas
Confessions of an English Opium Eater (Signed Smith Binding)
Kegan Paul, Trench & Co, 1885. First Edition, Thus. Full Leather. Fine. 8vo., xxii(3)275pp. First Edition Thus, "Reprinted from the first edition, with notes of De Quincey's conversations by Richard Woodhouse, and other additions. Edited by Richard Garnett. #40 of only 50 Large Paper Copies printed by the Chiswick Press, Chancery Lane, London. Signed on the limitation by the printer, Charles Whittingham & Co. under the series number. It is unclear whose signature this actually is as Charles Whittingham, the founder of the Chiswick Press, died in 1840 and his nephew, also Charles, dies in 1876. It is possible that it was signed by either George Bell, who acquired the press soon after Charles the younger's death, maintaining the Charles Whittingham & Co. brand, or Charles Thomas Jacobi who was a contemporary managing partner. Beautifully bound by W.R. Smith in full black morocco, raised bands, ruled in gilt on both boards and spine, titles in gilt on spine. t.e.g. Gilt borders on paste-downs with brown morocco doublures. Marbled end-papers. Silk bookmark. Square and tight with an immaculate interior and little or no wear. Perhaps a hint of wear at the top and bottom end of the joints but barely noticeable. Gilt is fresh and bright. Remarkably well-preserved. A gorgeous collectable copy of an uncommon item, particularly in such superior condition. [Attributes: First Edition]
