Miniature Italian Books Superb Set 23 Matching Vols.1840 Signed Leather Bindings
Baudry. Superb set of 23 matching volumes of miniature books all printed in 1840. All book published in Parigi by Baudry, Liberia Europa, 1840. Printed in Italian. Each volume measures approximately 3-7/8" high and 2-5/8" wide, with volumes being slightly different in thickness due to the particular authors works. Bound in beautiful full green leather, raised bands on spine with gilt compartments, gilt rulings and designs on both covers, gilt edge designs, all page edges are gilt. Bound by Peacock & Mansfield and signed by them on the back endpaper at the bottom. Peacock & Mansfield was a very prominent publisher and binder active mainly in the mid to late 1800s, so these bindings are certainly period to the publication of the books. The deluxe bindings like this they did were known to be of excellent quality, and most of their bindings were for special items, and not mass publications. Still, they are very hard to find and this is a superb example of the quality of their work. The bottom of the spines have the armorial design of EWR with the crown in the center and the words "Virtutis Gloria Merces" around it. These books were bound for the Scottish Clan of the Robertson's. There are seven authors included in this set, included are the following: Ariosto - 8 volumes Metastasio - 3 volumes Manzoni - 1 volume Niccolini - 1 volume Petrarca - 3 volumes Tasso - 4 volumes Dante - 3 volumes All volumes are clean and nice and have well taken care of.
