Venice, Appresso Gratioso Perchacino, Very rare early edition of great poet Torquato Tasso?s (1544-95) epic poem Il Goffredo, better known as Gerusalemme Liberata. This, the second edition to be produced by Venetian printer Percachino, edited by Venetian condottiere and translator Celio Malespini, was the third edition to appear in the year following the editio princeps. Tasso is as well known for his tortured life as his writing - he spent seven years incarcerated in the asylum of Santa Anna by order of the Duke of Ferrara, for erratic, unpredictable behaviour and violent bouts of melancholy. Provenance: Sticker of C. E. Rappaport (Rome) on front paste-down. Bookplate of Conte Leonardo Vitetti (1895-1973), Italian delegate to the UN and Italian embassy official in London and Washington D.C.
