With Anecdotes and Illustrative Notes from All the Most Authentic Sources. London: Richard Bentley, 1836. Four volume set. Full calf, top edges gilt, gilt-tooled turn-ins, decorative paper endpapers. This set extra illustrated with a total of 124 plates (the 28 called for plus another 96). All 28 plates listed in the binder's instructions at the end of volume IV are present. (There is a list of 11 plates in volume I, but the binder's instructions in volume IV call for 10, with the Kleber plate seemingly moved to the second volume.) The Battle of Austerlitz plate in volume II is bound a few pages before where it should be, with an extra Austerlitz illustration bound in its place. Total plate counts for the four volumes are 33, 29, 35, and 27. All plates with tissue guards. The extra illustrations include portraits of different personalities, as well as different scenes, and include a nice double plate depicting Saint Helena. Spine labels with various degrees of chipping (with one label on volume IV entirely lacking). Some rubbing and wear to the edges and corners, with some dulling and loss to the gilt tooling at the spines. A previous owner was probably a smoker as there is a definite odor of cigarette smoke.
