The plates are beautifully engraved by Edward Whymper (of Matterhorn fame) from drawings by Charles Whymper. A first-hand account of a private scientific expedition.and voyage on the schooner "Marchesa" from Japan to the South Pacific. As a member of the Royal Geographical Society, Guillemard worked as both a naturalist and ethnographer. This work is notable for its focus on lesser known islands as well as important ornithological observations Publisher's blue decorated cloth with stamped titles and decoration in gilt.
