G Routledge & Co, 1854. The Count of Monte-Cristo By Alexandre Dumas Published by G Routledge and Co, London Date: 1854. Single volume edition 700 pages, 23cm x 15cm x 5.5cm / 9" x 6" x 21/4" 20 illustrations, as called for, drawn on wood by M Valentin, several with original tissue guards. Bound by Glenn Malkin (2020) Text block general condition: Good. Overall light toning, especially at page edges. Some occasional spotting, marks and minor stains including water staining to a few of the plates at the lower corner (not extending onto adjacent pages). A couple of the plates show evidence of past pencil marks. Pages 276-280 showing some brown spotting possibly due to splashed liquid (see images). First and last couple of pages have been sympathetically repaired at the fold. The book has been professionally re-bound in full dark blue high quality goat skin with new hand-sewn silk double endbands and hand-made free endpapers added. Leather inner hinges incorporated and Cockerell hand marbled endpapers and doublures. Four raised bands and the title hand tooled in gold along the spine. Simple blind tooled elements extending on to the boards. Signed by the binder inside the rear board. Presented in a suede lined bespoke drop-back box, buckram covered for protection with leather title label to the spine. Additional photos/information available on request.
