Rare and Complete edition. Decorated with the portrait of the author, and accompanied by an atlas. Year : 1799 7 Volumes + 1 Atlas The volumes in 8o and the Atlas in 4o 4th Edition Text complete in all books and the Atlas as well, which contains beautiful maps and engravings of ancient greek monuments. The atlas contains 39 plates engraved by Tardieu. They are maps (sometimes with coloured limits), some views and plans. The last of them shows the medals, preceded by an explanation sheet. Condition : Signature of previous owner in the books. Foxing and stains in some pages. Tear in some of the blank pages. Additional info regarding the edition : Jean-Jacques Barthélemy's book was a fanciful but learned imaginary travel journal, one of the first historical novels, which a modern scholar has called "the encyclopedia of the new cult of the antique" in the late 18th century It had a high impact on the growth of philhellenism in France, Europe and the United States: the book went through many editions, was reprinted in the United States and was translated into German and other languages. It later inspired European sympathy for the Greek War of Independence and spawned sequels and imitations throughout the 19th century.
